A sick dog who will not drink needs advice about the cause and the ability to keep fluids down. Call your veterinary team rather than trying to meet an online water target. Mention reduced urination, vomiting, diarrhea, pain or difficulty swallowing.
Offer access; do not force fluid
Keep fresh water accessible to a dog who can drink normally. Do not syringe fluid into the mouth of an unwilling, weak or poorly responsive dog without clinical instruction. Difficulty swallowing or altered responsiveness changes what is safe; ask the team how to proceed.
Know when to seek urgent care
Breathing difficulty, collapse or severe distress needs immediate help. The MSD emergency guide explains how to obtain first-aid and transport advice. A home mixture or broth is not a substitute for assessing a sick animal.
Prepare a short history
Record when your dog last drank voluntarily, any measured amount, vomiting and other observations. Separate ‘not seen drinking’ from a measured zero intake. Keep any prescribed fluid plan with its original units and contact the clinic if it cannot be followed.
