Yes. The quick contains sensitive tissue and blood vessels, so cutting into it can hurt and cause bleeding. Stop trimming and keep the dog as calm as possible; a painful dog may bite.
Control bleeding and get help when needed
Use steady pressure with clean gauze or a clean cloth. A suitable pet styptic product can help with a small nail bleed when used according to its instructions. Persistent or heavy bleeding, a badly torn nail or substantial pain needs veterinary advice promptly, not a wait of a day. See VCA first aid for bleeding.
Explain what happened
- Which nail was affected and whether it was clipped or torn.
- When the bleeding began, what first aid was used and whether it has stopped.
- Any medicines or known bleeding problem.
