Scent and discharge can change during a dog’s heat cycle, but odor cannot identify the fertile period or tell you whether a dog is healthy. Do not rely on a change in smell to decide that contact with an intact male is safe.
Record changes, not a diagnosis
Write down when discharge started, its appearance and any change in activity or appetite. Ask the vet about new, foul-smelling discharge or signs of illness. The VCA explanation of estrous cycles is background for that conversation.
Keep care simple
Follow your vet’s hygiene and separation advice. This page does not recommend oral chlorophyll, perfumes, deodorants or hormone products to mask or change heat signs. Such products do not establish reproductive safety.
Plan spay timing individually
Ask the clinic how the current cycle affects the proposed procedure. A universal rule about operating before or after a particular heat does not account for the individual dog. See the VCA discussion of spaying and timing.
