Do They Remove The Testicles When Neutering A Dog?

In standard surgical castration of a male dog, both testicles are removed. ‘Balls’ is an informal name for the testicles; the surrounding skin is a different structure. Appearance alone is not a reliable way to verify which operation was performed.

Check the actual procedure

Ask the operating clinic to explain the discharge record, including whether either testicle was retained inside the body and what follow-up is needed. Sterilization methods are not interchangeable. The AVMA guide describes the distinction between standard neutering and other procedures.

Follow individual recovery instructions

Keep the clinic’s directions for pain relief, wound protection and activity. Do not infer that a dog is fully recovered from a generic number of days or from their willingness to play. Contact the clinic about an unexpected wound change, apparent pain or uncertainty about the instructions. VCA provides background on the procedure and aftercare.

Prepare questions

  • Which tissues were removed and were there any unusual findings?
  • Which activities are allowed, and when should the wound be checked?
  • What changes require a call or an urgent visit?

Behavior, fertility and recovery are separate questions; an operation does not provide a universal behavior guarantee.
