A dog may behave differently toward a companion whose routine or behavior has changed. That does not tell us whether the observer recognized an illness, what condition is present or how serious it is. Another dog’s attention is not a diagnostic test.
Record the dog with the possible problem
Describe changes in eating, drinking, movement, sleep or interaction, and when each began. Include any medicines and recent events. Keeping the observations specific makes them easier to discuss than interpreting a companion as ‘knowing’ something.
Do not wait for a companion’s reaction
Breathing difficulty, collapse, severe pain or uncontrolled bleeding calls for immediate veterinary help regardless of what another pet does. The MSD emergency guide describes that boundary.
Ask what the change means
Bring a dated history to your vet. Changes in an older dog can have treatable causes; the AVMA senior-pet guide explains the value of assessment. The note tool below helps retain your observations without turning them into a diagnosis.
