A dog being in heat is a reason to speak with the operating veterinarian before a planned spay. It is not a reason to make the timing decision from an online calculator. Tell the clinic when the signs started and whether mating may have occurred.
Why the clinic needs that information
Reproductive stage, health, size and the procedure affect the surgical discussion. A spay is abdominal surgery under anesthesia, and the clinician must assess the individual risks and whether to proceed or reschedule. VCA describes the procedure and timing considerations.
Prepare for the call
- Record the first date of discharge or other heat signs and any change since then.
- Report possible mating, illness, medicines and previous anesthesia problems.
- Ask which procedure is proposed, how timing affects it and what aftercare is required.
- Obtain the clinic’s instructions about separation from intact males while waiting.
