Another dog’s interest, sniffing or protective behavior cannot confirm that a female dog is pregnant. Such observations do not identify what the animal detected or understood. This guide concerns canine pregnancy; it does not assess pregnancy in people.
Use an appropriate pregnancy assessment
Veterinarians choose testing and imaging according to the stage and clinical question. Ultrasound can assess pregnancy and fetal viability; radiographs later in pregnancy can help count puppies. What to record for the appointment
- Dates of heat signs and any known or possible mating.
- Changes in appetite, activity, discharge or appearance, described without assigning a diagnosis.
- Previous pregnancies, current medicines and any urgent concerns.
Do not change feeding from another dog’s reaction
