Yes, a vaccinated dog can still develop a respiratory infection. ‘Kennel cough’ describes a respiratory disease complex involving multiple possible pathogens. Vaccination does not cover every cause or guarantee that coughing will never occur. Cornell explains the risks and limits of protection.
Arrange an assessment
Tell the clinic that your dog is coughing before attending so it can advise on arrival and contact with other dogs. Share the vaccination record, when the cough began and recent boarding, daycare or other exposure. A cough cannot be diagnosed from its sound alone on this page.
Recognize a reason for urgent care
Difficulty breathing, collapse or marked distress needs immediate veterinary attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment in that situation. See the MSD emergency guidance.
Keep a useful record
Note appetite, activity and cough timing, and follow your vet’s instructions about rest, isolation and treatment. Do not select antibiotics or human cough products using an online dose table. The notes below can help convey the history but cannot decide which treatment is appropriate.
