Add dog food to your shopping list

A useful dog-food shopping list starts with the exact product you already feed and the amount used each day. An ingredient shopping list is not a complete recipe: combining meat, vegetables and a binder does not establish nutritional adequacy.

Calculate the quantity to buy

  1. Enter the product’s calorie value and label unit in the meal planner.
  2. Record the daily portion and choose how many days you need to cover.
  3. Multiply the daily amount by those days, then subtract the usable food you already have. Keep the stock and portion in the same unit.
  4. Check the package size, storage instructions and expiry date before choosing how many packs to buy.

For example, 224 g per day uses 1,568 g over seven days. That is an arithmetic example, not a feeding recommendation. If your result is in cups, use the mass of this product’s cup before comparing it with a bag sold by weight.

Keep a product record

Save the full recipe name, calorie statement and portion alongside your plan. Include treats and other food in the calorie record so they do not disappear from the total. Update the label information when the recipe changes.

Check suitability separately

Read the nutritional adequacy statement for the intended life stage; the FDA explains what complete and balanced means. A home-prepared or therapeutic diet needs individual formulation and veterinary advice. The calculator below only converts energy into quantities.
