Changing from dry food to wet or fresh food can change the weight of a portion substantially. The useful link between them is the energy value of the actual product, not a universal conversion based on texture.
Use the planner to enter the food label, calculate portions and save a week’s quantities. The food pictures help you choose the relevant input format; switching them clears the old calorie value.

Compare food using a common unit
For calorie arithmetic, convert labels to kcal per gram or use a labelled cup directly. A food marked 3,600 kcal/kg contains 3.6 kcal/g. A food marked 100 kcal/100 g contains 1 kcal/g. These example foods require different gram portions to provide the same amount of energy.
Does more food by weight mean more calories?
Not necessarily. For example, 100 g at 3.6 kcal/g provides 360 kcal, while 200 g at 1 kcal/g provides 200 kcal. Weight alone does not answer the calorie question.
Can I mix several types?
Use the calories-in-the-bowl tool to enter each food separately. It keeps each label, weight and contribution visible in the chart and CSV, rather than applying one average density to the whole bowl.
What about nutritional completeness?
A calorie total is not a nutrient assessment. Check whether the product’s adequacy statement is appropriate for the intended life stage. Fresh or raw appearance does not establish that a recipe is complete and balanced.
A simple planning workflow
- Confirm the daily target or use a clearly labelled healthy-adult estimate.
- Enter the actual product’s calorie value and unit.
- Reserve the chosen treat allowance and split the remaining portion into meals.
- Download the week, then review weight and body condition with your veterinary team as appropriate.
