What does the Labrador equation compare?
The research model relates age-associated DNA methylation patterns in Labrador retrievers to those in humans. Its equation is 16 × ln(dog years) + 31. At five years, it gives about 56.8 human years.
This is not a universal breed formula. The tool names the study population and shows a separate common adult guideline so that two different methods are not blended into one unexplained answer.
Why does a young dog’s comparison rise so quickly?
The logarithmic model is not a constant seven-to-one ratio. Its slope is steeper early in life and flatter later. The graph is useful for seeing that shape; it should not be read as a forecast for an individual dog.
What does the common adult guide mean?
For a medium-sized dog, the broad guideline is about 15 human years at age one, 24 at age two and five more per year after that. The calculator interpolates between the first two milestones. At five years this guide gives 39, while the research model gives about 57. These methods represent different comparisons, so their values need not agree.
Turn age into better questions
Ask your vet how your dog’s breed, size and health affect their care at this life stage. Changes in appetite, activity or comfort deserve their own assessment rather than being explained away by a “human age” number.
