Reduced appetite in a sick dog is a clinical sign, not just a food preference. Contact your vet to discuss the cause and a feeding plan, especially when other symptoms are present. A dog may want food but have trouble chewing or swallowing; the VCA guide to appetite loss explains this distinction.
Do not force a meal
Ask what food, amount and feeding method are appropriate for the actual illness. Do not force-feed or add a medicine or supplement on the basis of a general article. A homemade ‘bland’ combination should not be described as a complete long-term diet without formulation.
Record intake accurately
- Note when your dog last ate and the amount actually eaten, rather than only the amount offered.
- Keep the food name and calorie label with that record.
- Record vomiting, diarrhea, pain, swallowing difficulty and current medicines.
Do not use a fixed 24- or 48-hour waiting rule for every animal. Breathing difficulty, collapse or severe distress needs immediate care. Once the vet agrees an energy target, our portion calculator can do the arithmetic; it cannot decide whether feeding is safe or which diet treats the problem.
Editorial correction · 2026-09-11
Removed blanket waiting periods, forced feeding and claims that an improvised diet is complete; separated appetite loss from feeding arithmetic.
