A pause in contractions, a smaller-looking abdomen or a count of placentas cannot prove that all puppies have been born. If you are unsure whether delivery is complete, contact the vet overseeing the pregnancy rather than relying on an online checklist.
Use the known pregnancy information
Share any expected litter count and how it was obtained. Later-pregnancy radiographs can help estimate the number of puppies; ultrasound is useful for pregnancy and viability assessment. These answer different questions, as described in the VCA pregnancy-testing guide.
Keep a delivery record
- Time each puppy was born and whether active straining continues.
- Record the mother’s behavior and any discharge or bleeding.
- Tell the clinic about a visible puppy that is not progressing, marked distress or a prolonged pause; ask for instructions immediately when concerned.
