There is no single reaction that establishes how every mother dog feels when puppies leave. Describe changes you can observe rather than assuming that a quiet, restless or less interested dog is experiencing a particular emotion.
Plan the transition
Weaning is a gradual transition away from nursing, and readiness for rehoming also includes development and social experience. Ask the veterinary team for a plan for this mother and litter. The VCA guide to care after weaning discusses these stages.
Track the mother’s recovery
- Record which puppies are nursing and when feeding arrangements change.
- Note the mother’s appetite, activity and any apparent discomfort.
- Report illness, painful mammary glands or a substantial change in behavior to the vet rather than attributing it automatically to sadness.
Use a routine as a record
The schedule below organizes activities you choose. It cannot determine when puppies should leave or prescribe exercise during recovery. Keep clinical instructions alongside the timetable, and change food amounts with the team overseeing lactation and weaning.
