A neutered dog may still mount another dog, a person or an object. Mounting is not proof that the operation failed, and it is not a reliable test of fertility. VCA explains that mounting can persist after neutering.
Clarify which question you need answered
If the concern is recent surgery or possible mating, contact the operating clinic and follow its instructions about recovery and separation. If the concern is repeated mounting, record when it occurs and what happens immediately beforehand. Those are different conversations.
What does neutering mean?
Standard surgical castration removes both testicles. Ask the clinic what procedure was performed rather than judging by the appearance of the remaining skin or by behavior. See the AVMA description of sterilization procedures.
Prepare useful observations
- Date of the procedure and the discharge instructions.
- Any contact with an intact female and its timing.
- Whether mounting is occasional or difficult to interrupt, and whether pain or distress accompanies it.
