Four-star dog food lists: how to read ratings

A four-star rating only has meaning within the system that awarded it. It does not, by itself, establish nutritional adequacy, safety or suitability for your dog. A product-range name containing ‘Four-Star’ is also not an independent rating.

Check the rating’s basis

• Who awarded it, and when was the exact recipe assessed?
• Are the criteria published? Do they measure label information, testing or only an opinion about ingredients?
• Are purchases, sponsorships or affiliate payments connected to the ranking?
• Does the recommendation identify the intended life stage and limitations?

Compare information you can verify

Keep the full product name, nutritional adequacy statement, calorie value and unit together. Use manufacturer information and the WSAVA food-selection resources to prepare questions. A star score is not a replacement for that information.

Compare portions on the same basis

Enter each exact label in the meal planner with the same daily energy target. A cheaper bag may last a different number of days because calorie density and package mass differ. Record the price date and pack size before calculating cost per day. These comparisons describe quantities and costs, not which food should treat a medical condition.
