How old is your dog, really?

A different way to think about growing older together. Explore the Labrador research model and see how the curve changes with age.

01 How old is your dog?

The research model was developed from Labrador retrievers. It compares age-related DNA changes; it does not predict lifespan or diagnose biological age.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your dog’s age and choose years or months.
  2. Choose the Labrador research model or the common adult age guide. Read the selected method’s population and age limits.
  3. Update the result and review the comparison and curve. Download the CSV or copy the result with its method label.

Dog years are a comparison, not a countdown

“Human years” can make a dog’s life stage easier to picture, but no single conversion describes every breed or individual. This tool offers two clearly labelled methods. Neither predicts how long your dog will live.

The Labrador research model

A study of age-related DNA methylation in 104 Labrador retrievers produced a logarithmic comparison with human ageing. The curve rises quickly in early life and more slowly later.

Human-age comparison = 16 × ln(dog years) + 31

At five dog years the equation gives about 56.8 human years, shown as 57 in the main result. The CSV preserves the unrounded calculation. We limit this comparison to eight weeks through 16 years and identify the study population instead of presenting it as a breed-independent clinical measurement.

The common adult guideline

The general guide described by the American Kennel Club uses about 15 human years at age one, 24 at age two and five more for each year after that for a medium-sized dog. This tool interpolates between the first two milestones. It begins at one year.

Different methods can give different answers because they describe different aspects of ageing. A difference between their results is not a sign that a dog is ill.

Questions about age

Why not just multiply by seven?

A fixed multiplier does not reflect the much faster developmental changes in a dog’s early life. Use a labelled comparison and keep its limitations in view.

Can I enter age in months?

Yes. Choose months and the calculator converts the input to years before applying the selected method. Entering 60 months produces the same research result as five years.

Does breed size matter?

Yes. The common guide is approximate and the research model used Labradors. A vet can interpret your dog’s life stage in the context of breed, size and health.

What can I do with the result?

Use it to start a conversation about life-stage care. The routine planner can help arrange activities you have already chosen, while body and muscle observations keep a different part of the picture in view.
