How to use this tool

  1. Select the unit on the existing veterinary prescription and enter the prescribed amount. For mg per kg, also enter the animal’s current weight and unit.
  2. Choose liquid or tablet and enter the exact product strength. For liquids, enter both the labelled milligrams and the corresponding millilitres.
  3. Update the conversion and check the units with your prescription. Download or copy the result; confirm the measurable amount and any tablet splitting with your dispensing team.

Convert a prescribed amount, with the units visible

This tool performs arithmetic on a prescription you already have. It does not recommend a medicine, choose a dose, set a frequency or assess whether a treatment is suitable for an animal.

Milligrams per dose

If the prescription already states a total amount of medicine per dose, enter that amount. The converter divides it by the strength of the liquid or tablet.

Milligrams per kilogram per dose

If the prescription is expressed per kilogram, enter the animal’s current weight and its unit. The tool calculates milligrams per dose before converting to a product quantity.

Liquid product strength

Enter the medicine amount and volume printed together on the label. Concentration is medicine amount in mg divided by volume in mL. The prescribed medicine amount divided by that concentration gives the calculated volume.

Tablet strength

Enter the mg in one tablet. A fractional mathematical result does not mean the tablet can be divided that way. Ask the dispensing team to confirm the appropriate product and measurable quantity.
